Culture of Jiu Jitsu Academy

Culture of Jiu Jitsu Academy in Gaithersburg, Maryland was founded by IBJJF World Champion and UFC fighter Max Gimenis alongside black belt Eric Philcox. Max, who earned his black belt under Júlio César Pereira of GFTeam, brings a lifetime of high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience to the mats, drawing on both his competitive pedigree and years spent immersed in the art. Eric Philcox, a black belt under Max, combines his business background with a deep passion for jiu-jitsu, helping to create a true team environment for students at every stage. The academy’s teaching staff includes accomplished instructors such as Márcia Ramos, a second-degree black belt and IBJJF referee specializing in women’s and kids’ classes, and striking coach Gregory Shepherd, a multi-time national champion and U.S. Army veteran who leads Muay Thai and kickboxing instruction. The team also features professors and coaches with diverse backgrounds, including military service and collegiate athletics, all united by a commitment to technical excellence and personal growth. Training at Culture of Jiu Jitsu covers a full range of programs for kids, adults, and women. The kids’ curriculum is split into “Little Roots” (ages 4.5–7) and “Big Roots” (ages 8–12), focusing on confidence, discipline, and foundational skills in the gi. Adults can train in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with dedicated beginner fundamentals, all-levels classes, and a women’s-only program led by experienced female instructors. Muay Thai fundamentals are also available for adults. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible, reflecting the academy’s open-door approach and attention to practical needs.
