Checkmat French Valley BJJ

Checkmat French Valley BJJ is led by Professor Helio Barthem, a 4th-degree black belt under Master Leonardo Vieira, co-founder of the Checkmat team. Helio has spent decades refining both his skills and his teaching methods to help students at all levels become stronger and more confident through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy’s mission centers on clear, effective instruction delivered in a safe and structured setting, welcoming everyone from first-timers to seasoned competitors. Training at the gym follows a well-organized progression, starting with fundamentals in the Beginners Program and Essentials classes, then moving into intermediate and advanced sessions like Modern BJJ LAB and Evolution. Both gi and no-gi training are available, with dedicated classes for no-gi and special sessions to sharpen those skills. Adults can also join open mat times to drill and spar freely. For younger practitioners, the academy offers separate gi and no-gi classes, including a competition-focused program for kids, emphasizing discipline, respect, and practical self-defense. The facility is wheelchair accessible and serves the Murrieta and French Valley areas, providing a local option for those wanting to study under the Checkmat banner. The academy’s approach balances technical development with fitness and self-defense, aiming to support each student’s personal growth on and off the mats.
