Cardoso Jiu Jitsu has been a fixture in South Miami since 2004 under the leadership of Michael Cardoso, a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who earned his rank from Ricardo Teixeira. Michael brings decades of experience as a competitor—having fought in over 40 professional MMA bouts—and as an instructor who holds additional black belts in Judo and Karate. He is also deeply involved in the martial arts world as a referee for major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA events, and as the Florida State Representative for UMMAF, connecting local athletes to international competition and governance. Classes at Cardoso Jiu Jitsu are structured for both adults and kids, with programs designed to build skill, fitness, and confidence. The academy’s Kids Jiu Jitsu program benefits from the guidance of assistant instructors like Danny Villalta, a physical therapist who emphasizes a safe, encouraging environment for young students, and Ricardo Verela, who brings a strong wrestling background and a passion for competitive grappling. Adults train in both fundamentals and advanced techniques, with an emphasis on practical application and continuous improvement. The academy operates out of a 2,500 square foot facility that includes over 1,200 square feet of mat space, fitness equipment, and a lounge area for students and families. Cardoso Jiu Jitsu is known locally for its energetic, family-like atmosphere, where students challenge and support each other daily. Michael Cardoso’s commitment extends beyond the mats, as he regularly conducts tactical defense seminars for law enforcement and women’s self-defense workshops, making the school an active part of the broader Miami community.
