Borges Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Humberto “Beto” Borges, a third degree black belt under Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti of Alliance. Born in Goiania, Brazil, Borges moved to Atlanta in 1998 and trained extensively with Jacaré before becoming the first Brazilian awarded a black belt under him in the United States. His competitive background includes medals at the Pan-American championships, and he spent time training with UFC veteran Josh Koscheck at AKA in California. Since opening his academy in Marietta with Jacaré’s endorsement, Borges has focused on adapting BJJ for law enforcement, developing control tactics that emphasize non-lethal outcomes. His instruction is POST certified and integrated into training for the Marietta Police Department and SWAT team. The academy offers a structured curriculum that begins with fundamentals classes designed to build a solid base in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Students progress through intermediate and advanced levels, with instruction in both gi and no-gi formats. Specialized programs include a kids’ anti-bullying class, a women’s self-defense program led by Allyson Borges, and law enforcement training overseen by both Professor Borges and Sergeant Ray Figueroa, a long-serving Marietta police officer and purple belt under Borges. The academy’s approach balances technical skill development with practical application, particularly in high-pressure or real-world scenarios. Classes run Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday mornings, and Saturday mornings, accommodating a range of schedules. The facility is wheelchair accessible and supports training for all ages, from youth to adults. Open mat sessions and private lessons provide additional opportunities for focused practice. With a deep connection to local law enforcement and a lineage tracing back to one of BJJ’s foundational figures, Borges Brazilian Jiu Jitsu emphasizes disciplined training grounded in respect and real-world effectiveness.
