Blythewood Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Thomas Castro, a black belt under Octavio "Ratinho" Couto and Rafael Lang from Octagon MMA in Dallas. Thomas combines his high-level grappling skills with nearly three decades in law enforcement, having served as Deputy Chief and Commander of the Criminal Investigations Bureau for the Dallas Police Department. His experience managing complex investigations and training at a top MMA academy shapes his focus on practical, efficient Jiu-Jitsu techniques that work in real situations. Thomas is also committed to teaching women’s self-defense and building skill through a grounded, straightforward approach. The academy offers a full range of classes for all ages and skill levels, with a strong emphasis on technical fundamentals and progression. Kids’ classes are overseen by Landon Thompson, a purple belt with lineage tracing back to Helio "Soneca" Moreira, who brings both martial arts experience and youth mentorship to the program. The kids train in gi-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu starting from toddlers through early teens. Adult classes cover gi and no-gi Jiu-Jitsu, along with dedicated open mat sessions for extra rolling time. Kickboxing instruction is also available, led by Tristan Robinson, a seasoned competitor and coach who emphasizes not just technique but the timing and strategy behind striking. Blythewood Jiu Jitsu trains in a wheelchair-accessible facility and maintains a schedule that supports focused training in both grappling and striking arts. The coaching staff includes instructors with diverse backgrounds and strong ties to the local area, many of whom balance martial arts with family and community commitments. This creates an environment where practical skill development and personal growth go hand in hand.
