Blue Ridge Jiu Jitsu is led by Josh Heath, a black belt awarded directly by Royce Gracie after passing a demanding test in 2025. Josh’s martial arts journey started with boxing in 2009 and expanded into grappling disciplines including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and catch wrestling by 2013. He trained under notable instructors such as Rey Garcia and Steve Hall before founding the academy with his wife Samantha in Mills River, North Carolina, in June 2023. Their goal was to create a school that honors the original roots of Jiu Jitsu while blending self-defense and sport techniques into a single curriculum. The academy’s instruction emphasizes real-world effectiveness, teaching students to handle resistance from opponents of varying sizes and to apply techniques under pressure. Classes cover fundamentals through advanced BJJ, competition training, takedowns, and self-defense, with programs tailored for adults, kids, and families. Kids’ classes focus on confidence-building and practical anti-bullying skills, while adults learn to stay calm and capable in stressful situations. The 753 Warrior Code underpins the culture, encouraging discipline, respect, and accountability beyond the mats. Blue Ridge Jiu Jitsu offers open mat sessions for adults and maintains a wheelchair-accessible facility. The academy serves Mills River and surrounding areas, supporting students who want to develop their skills seriously and steadily. Josh and Samantha remain active competitors and coaches, continuously refining their instruction to help each student grow physically, mentally, and psychologically through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
