BLACK LION JIU JITSU ACADEMY Grand Rapids Michigan is known throughout Byron Center for its disciplined, no-nonsense approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, rooted in authentic Gracie lineage. The academy is led by Chad Pomeroy, a black belt under Kroyler Gracie—grandson of Helio Gracie—and one of only six certified black belts under Kroyler. Chad’s journey began in 2006 after serving as an Army Iraq War veteran, and his leadership sets the tone for a school built on respect, hard work, and personal growth. The instructor team also includes Justin Andrews, a Marine Corps veteran and black belt with over a decade of training and competition experience, as well as coaches with strong backgrounds in wrestling, striking, and youth instruction. Classes at Black Lion Jiu-Jitsu are structured to serve everyone from first-timers to serious competitors. Adult BJJ classes are open to students ages 16 and up, focusing on both fundamentals and advanced techniques, with opportunities to train in both gi and no-gi formats. The kids’ program is divided by age: Young Champions introduces children ages 4–6 to the basics of jiu-jitsu, while Junior Grapplers and Young Adults classes guide students ages 7–12 through more technical training and competition preparation. All programs emphasize discipline, confidence, and mutual respect. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the academy offers striking classes for all ages, taught by Duncan Duffin, who brings decades of experience in Muay Thai, Sanshou, and boxing. The facility is wheelchair accessible and drop-ins are welcome, making it easy for visitors or prospective students to stop by and experience a class firsthand. Black Lion Jiu-Jitsu has been serving the greater Grand Rapids area since 2012, with a focus on building skill, resilience, and camaraderie on and off the mats.
