Founded in 2008 as a family-owned academy, Nelumbo has become a fixture in Oviedo by offering age-specific classes and practical training for both new and experienced students. Sensei Torres is known for his technical instruction, patience, and focus on personal growth, supported by a team of assistant instructors who share his values. Training at Nelumbo follows a clear path: adults start with white belt fundamentals before progressing through gi levels 1 to 4, with additional options in no-gi BJJ and judo. The academy places a strong emphasis on self-defense, offering dedicated Street Jiu-Jitsu and women’s self-defense classes that focus on real-life scenarios, escapes, and control positions. Children’s programs are divided into Little Jitsu for ages 4–6 and Kids Jitsu for ages 7–12, each designed to build discipline, confidence, and anti-bullying skills in a safe and structured setting. Nelumbo Jiu-Jitsu also accommodates families and nontraditional schedules, with homeschool physical education, after-school pickup, and summer camp options.
