Claim this gymAnn Arbor BJJ was founded in downtown Ann Arbor to offer a modern approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rooted in skill development and real problem-solving. Head instructor Royce Miller, a black belt under Margot Ciccarelli with over 17 years on the mats, brings a background in early childhood education and a passion for principle-based learning to every class. The academy exists to build long-term practitioners, focusing on adaptable, functional Jiu-Jitsu rather than quick fixes or rote memorization. Classes at Ann Arbor BJJ are structured around the Constraints-Led Approach and Ecological Dynamics, emphasizing live, unscripted training from the very first session. Instead of drilling fixed techniques, students of all ages learn by solving real grappling problems against resisting partners, developing timing, adaptability, and decision-making under pressure. The curriculum is deliberately designed for both adults and youth, with programs for ages 7–12 and a progression into adult classes at age 13. Athletes interested in competition can join specialized sessions that address the unique demands of sport BJJ, while open mats and "Rounds" classes offer additional opportunities for live training and experimentation. The facility itself reflects the academy’s commitment to purposeful training and student development. Outfitted with state-of-the-art Dollamur mats and wall padding, strength and conditioning equipment, and dedicated study and lounge spaces, the gym supports both serious practice and daily life. Classes run mornings, middays, evenings, and weekends, seven days a week, making training accessible for a wide range of schedules. Ann Arbor BJJ welcomes drop-ins and encourages a hands-on, discovery-based learning process for everyone who steps onto the mat.
