313 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in 2015 by Fabio Lima and Zander Heinen, both of whom spent years training at the renowned Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York City. With Marcelo Garcia’s express permission, they established the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in downtown Detroit, bringing a direct lineage from one of the sport’s most respected names. In 2023, longtime students and black belts Zach Mabey and Steve Pauley took over management and instruction, continuing the academy’s mission of providing authentic Jiu-Jitsu in the heart of the city. As the only official Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu Academy Association in Michigan, 313 BJJ maintains a focus on technical excellence and practical training. Students train under black belts who emphasize live drilling and rolling as core parts of each class, reflecting the performance-driven approach of their lineage. The academy welcomes adults of all backgrounds, offering open mat sessions where practitioners can apply techniques in a dynamic, hands-on environment. Located on the second floor at 4884 Grand River Avenue, 313 BJJ is wheelchair accessible and encourages drop-in visitors. The school’s leadership is proud to carry forward the spirit of their instructors, building a place where Detroit residents can develop their skills in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, learn effective self-defense, and be part of a growing local tradition.
