Xtreme Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Minneola is built on the experience and leadership of Professor Nicholas Recanati, a retired police officer and former lead training advisor for the Bergen County Police Academy. Professor Recanati’s practical approach to martial arts comes from decades of law enforcement and teaching, and he’s shaped the academy into a place where discipline, efficiency, and real-life self-defense are at the center of every class. Alongside him, his son Brandon “Sunshine” Recanati—who earned his black belt under his father and holds a Bang Muay Thai black belt under Duane Ludwig—brings a lifetime of competitive experience and a drive to keep the curriculum evolving. The teaching staff combines a range of specialties. Coaches like Janie Ramkishun, a Bang Muay Thai black belt and BJJ purple belt, and Justin Henselin, a black belt under Professor Recanati, provide both technical depth and a welcoming presence on the mats. Wrestling is a major part of the program, led by Professor Danny Mauro, who brings over 16 years of wrestling experience and a strong background in athletic coaching. The roster also includes instructors with backgrounds in military combatives, kung fu, and competitive kickboxing, allowing the academy to offer a broad base in both traditional and modern martial arts. Classes follow a structured progression, with gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults, open mat sessions, and specialty programs in Bang Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing, MMA, and wrestling. The kids’ curriculum is divided by age, starting with Sunshine Scrappers (ages 4–8) and advancing to Reca Warriors (ages 9–12), with additional youth wrestling and MMA options. The 8,000-square-foot facility includes a full cardio and weight area and is wheelchair accessible. Xtreme Gracie Jiu Jitsu welcomes visitors and drop-ins, and the day-to-day focus remains on building skill, confidence, and character—on and off the mats.
