At West County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students find a teaching team led by black belts with deep roots in the art and a genuine commitment to technical progression. Founder Mitch Kotok, a black belt under Clovis Silva, established the academy in Sebastopol in 2010. The instructor roster includes experienced competitors and teachers such as Stefan Dahlstet (third-degree black belt, with a background spanning eight countries), Jake Soled (who has medaled at every belt level), and Dion Burns (whose martial arts journey began in 1985 and includes international experience in both Japanese and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). This depth allows the academy to offer a broad perspective on the traditions and evolution of BJJ, blending classic techniques with modern approaches. Day-to-day training at West County BJJ is structured around fundamentals and advanced classes in both gi and no-gi formats. Fundamentals are taught by instructors including Jake Soled, Omar Figueroa, Dion Burns, and Greg Hancock, with an emphasis on live drilling and sparring. Advanced students can train under Jake Soled and Dion Burns in the gi, or with Stefan Dahlstet for no-gi, where his competition-tested techniques come into play. The schedule also features women’s classes led by Melissa Wyman, who brings decades of international training and a focus on sustainable, supportive practice. Kids’ programs are divided by age, starting as young as four, with instruction from black belts and experienced coaches, ensuring young students build a technical foundation from the start. West County BJJ maintains a relaxed, positive environment where drop-ins are welcome and open mat sessions are a regular part of the week. The facility is wheelchair accessible and offers amenities such as parking. Beyond BJJ, students can also take Power Yoga classes tailored for grapplers.
