Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been a fixture in Elk Grove since 2010, founded and led by Derek DiManno. Derek is a fourth degree black belt and the first American to earn that rank under World Champion Cassio Werneck. With more than 25 years on the mats, Derek’s own competition record includes multiple medals at the World Masters and Pan American Championships as well as two Fight 2 Win victories. His background also spans judo and wrestling, and he brings this depth of experience to every class, believing strongly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a force for positive change in people’s lives. Classes at Waza are offered seven days a week, with both gi and no-gi sessions for adults and a full schedule of youth programs. The adult program emphasizes technical progression, practical application, and building a sustainable training habit. Women’s-only classes are available, and open mat sessions give students the chance to experiment and roll in a less structured setting. Drop-ins are welcome. The kids’ program is headed by John McClean, an instructor with more than 20 years of experience teaching martial arts to children, and Chris Leonard, who leads the Little Samurai group for ages 4-6. Both bring broad martial arts backgrounds and a focus on personal growth, confidence, and skill-building beyond just technique. Waza’s youth classes are designed for ages 4 to 16, with attention to individual development and life skills as much as grappling. The academy is wheelchair accessible and maintains a steady presence in the Laguna West community.
