176 N York St, Elmhurst, IL
Vuk BJJ in Elmhurst was founded by a team of black belt instructors who have dedicated decades to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, both as competitors and as teachers. The academy’s roots run deep in both the Chicago and Rio de Janeiro scenes, with instructors like David Herrera Jr. (“Skinny”), who trained extensively under Leandro “Tatu” Escobar in Brazil and brought back a wealth of competition experience and technical depth. Rafael Rodrigues, a black belt under Master Leonardo Vieira of Checkmat, began his teaching journey early and has coached students to South American, Brazilian, and World titles. Eduardo Avelar, who joined the team in 2023 as head no-gi and competition coach, earned his black belt from Tatu on the podium at the World Championships and brings a strong Soul Fighters lineage. The academy’s programs are built around a structured progression, starting with the proprietary Jiu-Jitsu 101 curriculum for beginners and white belts. This foundation is complemented by all-levels classes that bring together students with different backgrounds and experience, as well as dedicated advanced and competition training for those preparing under IBJJF rules. Kids’ classes focus on building coordination, movement, and confidence, with a special anti-bullying module taught one week each month. Self-defense is emphasized throughout, drawing on the instructors’ real-world and competition-tested techniques. Classes run seven days a week in a modern, wheelchair-accessible facility at 176 N York St. Adult students benefit from open mat sessions and a flexible schedule, with drop-ins welcomed. The coaching team’s combined 75+ years of experience is evident in every class, whether students are stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for high-level tournaments.
