Vuk BJJ 2.0 in Wheaton is built around seasoned black belt instructors with deep roots in both Brazilian and American jiu-jitsu. The team includes David Herrera Jr. (“Skinny”), a black belt under Leandro “Tatu” Escobar, who spent five years training and competing in Rio de Janeiro and brings experience from major IBJJF championships. Rafael Rodrigues, a black belt under Leonardo Vieira (Checkmat), has more than two decades on the mats and has coached students to South American, Brazilian, and World titles. Eduardo Avelar, who joined the team in 2023, earned his black belt from Tatu Escobar after a standout competition career in Brazil and Europe, and now leads the no-gi and competition programs. The academy’s programs cover a full range of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for both kids and adults. Children’s classes focus on fundamentals, movement, and anti-bullying skills, with one week each month dedicated specifically to bullying prevention and self-defense scenarios. For adults, there’s a clear progression from Jiu-Jitsu 101—where new students learn foundational techniques and self-defense—to advanced and competition-focused sessions. The curriculum is designed to support both recreational practitioners and those preparing for IBJJF-style tournaments, with dedicated competition classes and open mat times available. Training at Vuk BJJ 2.0 happens seven days a week in a modern, wheelchair-accessible facility. Visitors and drop-ins can expect a structured environment led by experienced coaches who emphasize technical growth, practical self-defense, and the sport’s competitive side. The Wheaton location is part of a broader team that includes a sister academy in Elmhurst, sharing a consistent philosophy and instructor lineage across both schools.
