Villanueva Grappling Arts / Six Blades Jiu Jitsu La Mesa is guided by Professor Julio Villanueva, a San Diego native who earned his black belt under Saul and Xande Ribeiro. Julio’s background in wrestling gave him an early foundation in grappling, but it was the depth and effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that truly captured his dedication. Over years of training and competition, he has developed a teaching style rooted in the principles of Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu, emphasizing family, respect, loyalty, discipline, attitude, and honor. The academy’s mission extends beyond technique, aiming to nurture both the spirit and the body through martial arts. The academy offers structured classes for a broad age range, starting with Kinder classes for ages 3 to 5 and progressing through kids and teen programs, including a Teen/Advanced group for practitioners holding yellow belts or higher. Adult students can participate in both basics and advanced gi classes, ensuring a clear progression path. Open mat sessions are available for adults 16 and up, providing space for additional drilling and sparring. The curriculum remains focused on gi training, reflecting the traditional approach of the Ribeiro lineage. Located on Lake Murray Boulevard in San Diego, the facility is wheelchair accessible and supports drop-in students. The school’s philosophy centers on practical self-defense through submissions and leverage, equipping students to handle larger opponents effectively. Villanueva Grappling Arts maintains a commitment to cultivating a strong, disciplined environment that honors the core values embedded in Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu.
