Vermont Brazilian BJJ is guided by Julio Cesar “Foca” Fernandez Nunes, a 7th degree coral belt under Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Julio “Foca” brings a competitive pedigree that includes five Brazilian National Championships and two IBJJF World titles. His direct connection to Carlson Gracie’s lineage shapes the academy’s focus on authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense, emphasizing respect, perseverance, and integrity alongside technical development. Classes at Vermont BJJ cover a broad spectrum from youth programs like Ninjas (ages 4-6), Big Ninjas (7-9), and Top Guns (10-15) to adult instruction that includes beginner-oriented BJJ Intro and Basics classes, as well as advanced flow classes for blue belts and higher. The curriculum integrates gi and no-gi training, with dedicated no-gi sessions for adults and a summer schedule featuring no-gi kids classes. Additional striking fundamentals and MMA classes expand the skill set beyond grappling, reflecting Julio’s USA Boxing coaching certification. The academy offers open mat sessions nearly every evening, providing students with ample opportunity to drill and spar outside of formal classes. Private lessons with Julio “Foca” are available for personalized instruction, leveraging his extensive competition and coaching experience. Located in Williston near Burlington, Vermont Brazilian BJJ maintains a structured approach that balances technical rigor with character development, aiming to cultivate both skilled practitioners and confident individuals.
