At Vanguard Academy Jiu Jitsu - Commack, students step onto the mats under the guidance of instructors whose roots run directly to Matt Serra and John Danaher’s blue basement in Manhattan. Classes are led by black belts Jason Rau and Nick Ronan, both of whom earned their rank from Serra and spent years training under Danaher alongside some of the sport’s most accomplished competitors. Rau brings experience as an ADCC North American Trials runner-up, while Ronan has represented Team USA on Polaris and continues to compete internationally. The academy’s newest black belts, Dylan Benningfield and Manny Reinoso, reflect a commitment to developing homegrown talent; both came up through the Vanguard ranks and now teach alongside their mentors. The class structure at Vanguard Commack is clear and progressive. Adults can choose from fundamentals and all-levels classes in both gi and no-gi, with advanced sessions and a dedicated competition class that welcomes athletes from any gym. There’s also a gi class tailored for students aged 40 and up. For striking, UFC lightweight Matt Frevola leads the kickboxing program, bringing his experience from the Serra-Longo Fight Team to blend technical striking with practical MMA application. Younger students find a structured path from their very first class. Kids’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs begin as early as age 3, split into appropriate age groups and skill levels through the teens. Both gi and no-gi training are available, and advanced kids’ classes help prepare the next generation of competitors. The academy also offers kids’ MMA and welcomes drop-ins for many classes. Located on Jericho Turnpike, Vanguard Commack provides wheelchair-accessible facilities and a schedule designed to meet the needs of both recreational and competitive athletes.
