Vagabond Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Vagabond Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been part of Odessa since 2014, founded with the goal of giving locals a positive space to train, connect, and find a healthy outlet outside of work or nightlife. The academy is led by Ruben Hernandez, a third-degree black belt and the head instructor, alongside a dedicated team including Joshua Olliff (coach and owner), and coaches with backgrounds in gi, no-gi, wrestling, Muay Thai, and MMA. Vagabond’s coaching staff brings a mix of technical knowledge and practical experience, working together to guide students through the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Classes at Vagabond are structured for all ages, starting with Little Ninjas (ages 3–5), kids (6–9), and teens (10–14), each group benefitting from small student-to-coach ratios and a team of at least four coaches in the children’s sessions. The adult program covers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the academy also offers wrestling and striking options through specialized coaches. Early morning classes at 5:30 a.m. make training possible for those with demanding schedules, and Vagabond’s facility is wheelchair accessible. Beyond regular classes, the academy hosts corporate self-defense and team-building seminars, as well as occasional wrestling clinics open to all affiliations. The school’s approach is rooted in forging discipline, confidence, and camaraderie through consistent training, with a focus on helping members of Odessa develop both on and off the mats.
