V1SION Jiu Jitsu (Checkmat) in Ladera Ranch is built on the coaching and competitive experience of the Capociama family. Professor Marcelo “Captain” Capociama, a third-degree black belt from Santos, Brazil, leads the academy with an old-school approach that emphasizes technical detail and a structured curriculum. His son, Professor Joao Capociama, received his black belt from his father in 2022 and brings a blend of classic fundamentals and modern guard work to the mats. Both Marcelo and Joao have deep competition backgrounds, with accomplishments in national and international events in both gi and no-gi, and they anchor the school’s connection to the global Checkmat team. Training at V1SION covers adult BJJ fundamentals, competition-focused classes, and open mat sessions, with an active schedule throughout the week. The academy also offers Muay Thai for adults, taught with the same technical and intentional approach as the grappling program. For kids and teens, the program is especially strong: Coach Annie Capociama, recognized as a JJWL Athlete of the Year in 2022, leads youth classes that combine discipline, practical technique, and a track record of producing league champions. Kids wrestling is part of the core curriculum, and several coaches—including Allan Aguilera, Luke Druckrey, and Kayla Bowman—bring years of training and competition experience to both the junior and adult classes. The academy welcomes families and students from Ladera Ranch and surrounding areas, offering a direct line to Checkmat’s international network and a locally rooted coaching staff. V1SION’s competition identity is evident, with athletes participating in ADCC events and a steady focus on skill development for both recreational and competitive grapplers. The gym is wheelchair accessible and maintains a practical, focused training environment six days a week.
