V.O.W. BJJ, short for Village of Wolves, has been part of the North Loop neighborhood in Austin since 2018. The academy is led by head coach Ryan Villalobos, a black belt who, along with a diverse group of instructors including Ivan Rodriguez, David Banta, Jason Hair, and others, brings a range of experience and teaching styles to the mats. The staff’s backgrounds span both traditional and modern jiu-jitsu approaches, with a clear focus on helping students find their own path in the sport. Training at V.O.W. covers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a structured beginner pathway that limits new students to foundational classes for their first three months to ensure a solid base. The schedule includes dedicated classes for kids, giving younger students their own space to learn, and a women’s only no-gi session on Sundays. Beyond jiu-jitsu, the academy offers Muay Thai and MMA classes, as well as takedown and leg lock fundamentals, providing options for students interested in a wider range of grappling and striking skills. Open mat sessions and positional sparring give members a chance to test techniques and roll outside of formal instruction. The academy emphasizes a relaxed, open atmosphere where students are encouraged to express themselves and support each other's growth. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Whether working through the grip-heavy details of gi or the speed and transitions of no-gi, students can train a full spectrum of grappling and striking arts under one roof at V.O.W.
