Jona, a black belt under Walter Fontes Vital Jr. of the Cascão Jiu-Jitsu Association, built the academy to provide consistent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction despite pandemic restrictions. The school maintains a strong connection to the Cascão lineage, with all instructors earning their belts directly from Walter Vital Jr., linking back through a lineage that includes Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie Sr., and Carlson Gracie Sr. Underground Jiu-Jitsu 702 operates from its facility in Desert Oaks Plaza, serving the local community with a structured approach to grappling arts. Classes at Underground Jiu-Jitsu 702 cover a broad spectrum of disciplines including traditional gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, no-gi grappling, wrestling, and judo. The academy schedules a mix of fundamentals and advanced sessions for adults and teens, alongside specialized no-gi and vale tudo no-gi classes. Kids’ programs run several evenings per week, offering instruction in both gi and no-gi formats, led by instructors with a focus on technique, respect, and control. Open mat sessions provide additional training time for students to drill and spar freely. Strength and conditioning classes complement the grappling curriculum, designed to enhance muscle endurance and overall fitness, with sessions available six days a week. The instructional team includes Professor Augusto Soriano, a first-degree black belt with a wrestling background, and Professor Chee Lim, also a first-degree black belt with competitive experience in both judo and BJJ. Professor Ramon Guzman, recently promoted to black belt, and Coach Alma Romero, a brown belt who leads strength and conditioning, round out the coaching staff. Each instructor brings a distinct skill set and competitive experience, contributing to a training environment that emphasizes proper technique and practical self-defense. The academy’s philosophy centers on developing efficient grapplers capable of controlling opponents and defending themselves effectively.
