True Art Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Fairlawn, Ohio, was founded in 2018 with a clear coaching philosophy: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about leverage, patience, and composure under pressure. Professor Shannon White, a black belt under Mark Vives (an 82-time IBJJF gold medalist), leads the academy. His approach combines technical depth with the competitive mindset that has produced multiple IBJJF champions and team titles for the gym. The academy is home to athletes who have earned gold at IBJJF Worlds, ADCC Opens, and NAGA events, but the focus in class remains on skill development and building control—both on and off the mats. Classes at True Art are structured to guide students from fundamentals through advanced skills, with a strong foundation in traditional gi training and additional no-gi options for adults. Beginners are given a clear on-ramp with dedicated fundamentals classes, ensuring that new students have a manageable entry point. Adults can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with sessions running throughout the week, including midday and evening classes. Open mats are offered multiple times weekly, encouraging students to drill, roll, and refine their techniques alongside accomplished training partners. The kids and teens program starts at age six and is designed to teach discipline and focus while preparing young athletes for competition if they choose that path. True Art’s youth team has earned recognition as NAGA Cleveland Kids Team Champions, reflecting both the structure and intensity of the junior curriculum. The academy also offers an invitation-only competition team for those who want to pursue tournament success at the highest level, training with Tac Team BJJ at major events. Drop-ins are welcome, and the atmosphere is shaped by a roomful of dedicated practitioners who push each other to improve every day.
