The JiuJitsu Academy

The JiuJitsu Academy in Evansville is led by Professor Bruce Shepherd, a 5th degree black belt with more than 30 years of experience training and competing worldwide. His lineage includes Master Marcelo Ferreira and Grand Master Francisco Mansor, grounding the school firmly in traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Shepherd’s approach to teaching emphasizes accessibility, ensuring that both beginners and advanced students can deepen their understanding of the art. The academy was established to provide a safe, clean, and focused environment for learning BJJ under seasoned guidance. Students at The JiuJitsu Academy train on high-quality Zebra mats spread across two spacious training areas. The facility also includes locker rooms, showers, and a Pro-Shop offering gis, rash guards, and other gear. The academy’s class offerings cover a broad spectrum: Basic BJJ classes for adults focus on fundamentals and core movements, while Team Camp sessions provide gi training for all levels. Open mat times are available for additional practice and sparring. Children as young as three can begin with Pre-K BJJ classes, progressing through Jr. BJJ for ages six to thirteen. Beyond the basics, the academy features intermediate and advanced classes that allow practitioners to refine techniques and prepare for competition. Judo instruction is also offered, emphasizing stand-up skills and takedowns. Private lessons and group classes cater to different learning preferences and goals, reflecting the academy’s flexible approach.
