Team Monstro Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Team Monstro Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Coach Shaq Cruz, a first-degree black belt who earned his rank under Master Fabio Santos in 2017. Shaq’s background includes training in Okinawan Karate, Tang Soo Do, Boxing, and Muay Thai, reflecting a broad martial arts foundation that informs the school’s approach. The academy opened in 2009 in El Mirage, Arizona, and has since focused on teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for self-improvement, emphasizing adaptability, efficiency, and mental as well as physical challenge. Students at Team Monstro train in both gi and no-gi formats, with classes structured across age groups. Kids as young as three start in beginner classes, progressing through Mini Jiu Jitsu programs for ages 7 to 14, while adults train in gi classes designed for all levels. The instruction includes open mat sessions where practitioners can drill techniques and spar with peers outside of formal class times. The academy also offers private lessons to address individual needs and skill development. Beyond technique, Team Monstro’s teaching philosophy highlights self-discipline, respect, and problem-solving skills.
