Surfight Jiu Jitsu Club

Surfight Jiu Jitsu Club in Del Mar was founded by Joel Tudor and Magid Hage, two instructors whose names carry weight in both the martial arts and surfing worlds. Joel Tudor is a 5th degree black belt and the only person to claim world titles in both surfing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, while Magid Hage holds a 3rd degree black belt, with experience as an ADCC and Copa Pacifica competitor. Their combined roots run deep through the Carlson Gracie Team and Gracie Barra, and their outlook shapes every part of the gym’s approach. Day-to-day, Surfight offers a full slate of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for adults and kids, with a balance of gi and no-gi instruction. Adults can start with beginner classes in either format, progress through all-levels sessions, and push themselves in advanced training in both gi and no-gi. The kids’ program focuses on building confidence and discipline in a safe, structured setting. Judo is also on the schedule, reflecting the academy’s respect for takedowns and grappling fundamentals. Open mat sessions—gi and no-gi—give students time to experiment and learn from each other outside of formal class. Surfight is known for its relaxed uniform policy and its ocean-inspired, laid-back atmosphere, but the training is serious: hard rounds, technical instruction, and a straightforward attitude toward improvement. Drop-ins are welcome, with no restrictions on affiliation, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. The gym draws students from across North County San Diego, creating a mix of backgrounds and experience levels on the mats.
