St Pete Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded by Sean Lynch, a black belt under Professor Eduardo ‘Veio’ de Lima of the Gracie Barra lineage. Sean began training in the late 1990s and helped start the St. Petersburg program in 2006 while still a purple belt, eventually opening the independent academy in 2013. Alongside a team including instructors with backgrounds ranging from UFC champion Matt Serra to Marine RECON and judo national champions, the school reflects decades of combined experience in gi and no-gi, competition, and self-defense. The curriculum is organized to guide students from fundamentals through advanced techniques in both gi and no-gi formats. Fundamental classes focus on core self-defense skills—escapes, sweeps, takedowns, chokes, and joint locks—while advanced sessions delve into more complex positional control and submissions. The school also offers wrestling takedown classes, a judo/takedowns program led by a 3rd degree judo black belt, and women’s introductory classes. Sunday Funday and white belt workout sessions provide additional training variety. Regular seminars with guest instructors supplement the in-house instruction. Training at St Pete BJJ emphasizes steady skill development with attention to detail and practical application. The academy welcomes drop-ins and maintains a clean, wheelchair-accessible facility. Its long local roots and broad instructional team support a training environment where students can pursue fitness, competition, or self-defense goals with structured guidance across multiple grappling disciplines.
