107 South St Unit BB, Boston, MA
South Boston Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is owned and led by Ruben Coronado, a second-degree black belt who has trained and competed since 2008. Before building his own Boston academy, Coronado taught at notable programs including Bernardo Faria Academy, Gracie Barra Westchase and Atos Jiu Jitsu HQ in San Diego. His competition résumé includes an IBJJF Gi World Championship medal, a No-Gi American National finals appearance and multiple IBJJF Open titles. The academy’s coaching staff has grown around that foundation. Black belt Matt Ferran developed through South Boston BJJ and teaches submission grappling, while Abdul Khan helps lead the morning and introductory programs. The current Let’s Roll profile includes gi and no-gi, beginner and kids training, giving the school structure for newer students alongside a competition-capable room. For grapplers in South Boston and nearby neighborhoods, the academy is especially interesting because Coronado brings experience from several major BJJ organizations without turning his school into a copy of any one of them. His continued competition activity and the development of homegrown instructors give South Boston BJJ its own local identity.
