Sonoma Valley Jiu Jitsu opened its doors in 2024 with a simple mission: to give Sonoma a place where people of all ages could train authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and find real support on and off the mats. Owner and coach Tavis Moses leads the academy, drawing on his years of experience to guide both adults and kids. Tavis’s vision was shaped by his work in larger organizations, but he wanted something closer to home—a school where families and individuals could learn, grow, and belong. The academy is a proud affiliate of Roy Dean Academy, and that influence shows in the technical, detail-oriented approach to teaching and the respect for tradition. The coaching team brings a range of backgrounds to the mats. Dr. Tim Smith, the academy’s resident black belt, earned his rank under Michael Stratton Jr. after training with Carlos Sapao and others, and he brings decades of experience as both a martial artist and physician. His classes focus on fundamentals, self-defense, and long-term health. Josh Goessling, a brown belt, has a deep background in traditional martial arts before turning his focus to BJJ. Coach Johnny Blanchard, a purple belt and lifelong grappler, adds energy and wrestling experience, especially in no-gi classes. Together, the coaches emphasize practical skills, safety, and steady progress for every student. Classes at Sonoma Valley Jiu Jitsu cover the full range of ages and interests. Young children start in the Lil Ninjas program, while older kids can move into Juniors Jiu Jitsu and Juniors Judo. Adults have access to gi and no-gi fundamentals, advanced classes, and even striking through kickboxing. There’s also a dedicated judo class for adults and open mats that welcome drop-ins. The schedule is organized to make it easy for families to train together, and the atmosphere is shaped by the coaches’ focus on respect, discipline, and personal growth. The academy is wheelchair accessible and aims to make quality martial arts training available to the whole Sonoma community.
