Soca Brazilian Jiu Jitsu San Diego - Rancho Bernardo is led by Professor Bruno Albuquerque, a 4th degree black belt under Master Alexandre “Soca” Freitas. With over thirty years of experience in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Professor Bruno brings a lifetime of dedication to the art, both as a competitor and as a teacher. Earning his black belt in 2009, he has collected multiple IBJJF International Open titles and carries forward the principles of discipline and lifelong learning that define the Soca lineage. The teaching team also includes Professor Johnny Ferrer, a 3rd degree black belt and self-defense specialist with a background in law enforcement, Professor Rafael Ferreira Couto, who focuses on martial arts and autism inclusion, and Professor Alehander Mariano, an IBJJF World and Pan Champion. The academy offers a structured program for students of all ages, starting with kids’ classes for ages 3 and up, divided into age-appropriate groups to support steady development as children grow. The adult program covers all levels, with separate classes for beginners and advanced students, including dedicated No-Gi sessions and wrestling for teens and adults. The curriculum emphasizes both technical skill and practical self-defense, integrating lessons from BJJ, Judo, and striking. Women’s classes and private instruction are available, and the academy maintains a family-oriented approach where parents and siblings often train alongside each other. Training at Soca BJJ San Diego includes open mat sessions and welcomes drop-in visitors. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the schedule is designed to accommodate busy families and working adults. The coaching staff’s diverse expertise—ranging from high-level competition to specialized instruction for students with autism—reflects the school’s mission of building confidence, character, and technical proficiency for every student who steps on the mat.
