Seishin Ju-Jitsu

Seishin Ju-Jitsu, based in Southgate within Greater London, was founded in 2015 by Shihan John Michell, a 6th Dan instructor recognised by the Kenpo Jutsu Alliance GB. John’s extensive background includes nearly two decades at Total Self Defence, where he reached 4th Dan, and numerous international seminar appearances. His leadership has shaped Seishin Ju-Jitsu into a club focused on practical self-defence and martial arts rooted in traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu, often called the “Mother Art” for its influence on disciplines like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and MMA. The club’s location at Southgate Methodist Church offers convenient access for North London residents. Training at Seishin Ju-Jitsu covers a broad curriculum that includes striking—kicks, punches, blocks—alongside grappling techniques such as joint locks, submissions, takedowns, and ground defence. The instruction emphasises real-world applicability for street self-defence while promoting fitness, stamina, flexibility, and mental discipline. Classes accommodate all fitness levels and ages, with women-only sessions led by Sensei Carla Joaquim, a 1st Dan black belt who also supports corporate and community groups through tailored private lessons. This approach ensures a safe environment where technical precision and practical effectiveness are paramount. The academy holds regular classes twice weekly and offers private tuition for individuals and small groups, including specialised training for sectors like healthcare and education. Under Shihan John’s guidance, the club has maintained steady growth despite challenges such as the pandemic. Seishin Ju-Jitsu also participates in seminars across the UK, reinforcing its connection to broader martial arts communities.
