San Marcos Jiu Jitsu is led by Jean “Dalua” Cartagena, a third degree black belt under André “Tim” Monteiro of A Force BJJ, and Steven Koenig, a black belt who began his journey as a student at Texas State. Dalua brings over a decade of coaching experience in North America, as well as a competitive resume that includes IBJJF Pan gold, multiple Nogi Worlds medals, and a broad background in judo and wrestling—having even trained with Puerto Rico’s Olympic teams. Steven, a Texas native, returned after years of training with respected teams like Relson Gracie, Checkmat, and GFTeam, earning his black belt under Dalua and setting down roots to share Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the San Marcos community. Classes at San Marcos Jiu Jitsu are structured to serve everyone from preschoolers to adults. The Little Champions program welcomes children as young as three, focusing on motor and social skills through playful but disciplined BJJ instruction. Kids aged 6–12 can join all-levels or homeschool groups, learning practical self-defense and confidence through a curriculum that emphasizes real technique and positive habits. Adults have access to both gi and no-gi classes, with a strong foundation in fundamentals for beginners and tested techniques for more advanced students. Women’s classes and open mats round out the schedule, and drop-ins are welcome. The academy’s approach is built on details and practical learning, with Dalua and Steven both known for their hands-on coaching and commitment to each student’s progress. The school is wheelchair accessible and offers classes throughout the week, including options for families and early learners. San Marcos Jiu Jitsu exists to provide a stable, skill-driven environment for the community, led by instructors who have lived and trained the art at every level.
