San Juan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

San Juan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Mike Downing, a black belt under Pedro Sauer who opened the academy in Aztec, New Mexico after relocating from Oregon in 2018. Downing’s martial arts background spans decades, beginning with Tae Kwon Do in the 1970s and evolving through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training directly under Royce Gracie in Los Angeles. He has maintained affiliations with the Pedro Sauer Association since 2001 and with Rylan Lizares’ Gracie Technics since 2008. The academy’s lineage traces back to Helio Gracie through Sauer, reflecting a traditional gi-based approach to BJJ. Classes at San Juan BJJ focus on clear technique instruction with a steady progression from fundamentals to more advanced training. The schedule includes gi classes for adults and children, with distinct groups for ages 4 to 8 and 7 to 11. Family classes allow multiple generations to train together. Beyond BJJ, the academy offers kickboxing and MMA classes, integrating stand-up striking with grappling skills. Open mat sessions and drop-in options provide flexibility for students to supplement their training. The facility is wheelchair accessible and operates six days a week, accommodating a variety of schedules. Downing’s teaching philosophy emphasizes practical application and personal improvement, drawn from his years as a martial artist and law enforcement officer. San Juan BJJ continues to build on its deep roots in traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while serving the Aztec community with consistent, disciplined instruction.
