Sal's Jiu Jitsu and Grappling was founded by Coach Sal, whose journey on the mats began at age twelve with wrestling. After a standout high school career at DeKalb and a year wrestling at Millikin University, Sal transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, training and teaching across the Chicagoland area since 2008. His experiences in wrestling rooms and MMA gyms shaped the academy’s focus: a place where “Train Hard, Be Kind” is more than a motto. Sal and his team aim to share that philosophy with Sycamore and the greater Northern Illinois grappling community. The academy offers a wide range of programs for both youth and adults. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is taught in traditional gi and no-gi formats, with separate classes for kids and adults. Competition training is available for both age groups, reflecting the staff’s own backgrounds in high-level competition. Kids as young as three can start in classes led by experienced coaches who understand how to keep young students engaged and learning. Alongside BJJ, the schedule includes wrestling, MMA, Muay Thai, boxing, and strength and conditioning, making the gym a training ground for athletes interested in every aspect of grappling and striking. Sal’s BJJ welcomes drop-ins and offers open mat sessions for those looking to get extra rounds or visit from other gyms. The facility is wheelchair accessible and houses a fully equipped strength and conditioning area. Whether a student is just starting out or preparing for their next tournament, the daily work at Sal’s reflects the lessons Coach Sal learned on the mat—discipline, respect, and a genuine love for the grind.
