Claim this gymRonin BJJ was founded in downtown New Haven to create a space where grapplers of all backgrounds could train together and learn from each other, without the rigid hierarchies often found in traditional martial arts schools. Head instructor Luis Figueroa, an IBJJF-certified 3rd degree black belt under Luigi Mondelli of American Top Team, brings over 15 years of competition experience and a deep commitment to sharing his knowledge. His resume includes multiple IBJJF Pan Am and New York Open titles, as well as dozens of gold medals from NAGA and Grapplers Quest events. Assistant coach Andrew Spinnato, also an IBJJF-recognized black belt, adds expertise from freestyle wrestling, catch wrestling, and MMA, ensuring students are exposed to a broad range of grappling styles. The academy’s teaching philosophy is centered on cooperative learning and mutual respect, with an emphasis on practical skill development over ceremony. Students are encouraged to see each other as training partners and peers, and the instructors strive to foster an ego-free environment. This approach is reflected in the curriculum, which blends traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—both gi and no-gi—with submission wrestling, judo, scholastic wrestling, and even elements of sambo. Luis and Andrew have coached hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to compete successfully at all levels. Ronin BJJ offers a full schedule of adult and youth programs, including gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, submission grappling, Muay Thai/MMA, and team strength and conditioning. The academy’s 3,000 square foot facility includes a dedicated strength studio and showers, making it easy for students to train before or after work. Open mats are a regular feature, and drop-ins are welcome. The youth program introduces kids to BJJ fundamentals and self-defense, while adults benefit from fundamentals classes, advanced training, and competition preparation.
