RMBJJ Academy of Jiu Jitsu has been a fixture in Delray Beach since 2009, led by Professor Rodrigo Mendes, a 5th degree black belt with roots in the art stretching back to the early 1990s in Rio de Janeiro. Professor Mendes, certified by the IBJJF and an experienced competitor and referee, brings a direct lineage from Mitsuyo Maeda through Carlos Gracie and Carlson Gracie, all the way to Alexandre “Grandão” Dantas. Alongside a staff of seasoned black belt instructors, he has built RMBJJ into the longest-operating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in the area, focused on practical skill development and personal growth for every age group. Classes at RMBJJ are structured for all stages of life, starting with preschool Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for ages 3–5, where the emphasis is on gross motor skills and confidence-building. Kids and teens from 5 to 15 progress through programs like Tiny, Mini, Lil, and Jr Champs, guided by dedicated coaches such as Professor Ashley, who directs the youth curriculum. Adult students (16+) have access to both gi and no-gi training, including fundamentals, intermediate/advanced, and specialized Challenge classes. Open mat sessions are available for those looking to refine their game or roll with new partners, and private training is offered for more focused instruction. RMBJJ’s teaching philosophy centers on realistic and safe martial arts training, with a strong emphasis on respect, perseverance, and self-defense. The academy encourages family involvement and welcomes visitors to watch or try a class. With over a decade of local history and a staff deeply invested in the art, RMBJJ continues to serve Delray Beach as a steady home for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners of all backgrounds.
