1390 Biddle Rd Suite 106, Medford, OR
RiceBros Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Medford is run by black belt Nicholas Rice, who has been on the mats since 1997. Nick grew up training under his father Rodney Rice—a black belt under John Dill and Joe Moreira—and John Dill himself, whose own lineage traces back to Rickson Gracie. After earning his blue and purple belts in Redding, Nick moved to Southern California, where he trained with David Dunn (a Jean Jacques Machado black belt), Karo Parisyan, and a range of other coaches before returning to the Northwest. In 2018, his younger brother Tanner Rice, a champion black belt under Cobrinha, awarded Nick his own black belt. Nick now leads the Medford academy, channeling decades of experience into every class. Day to day, Nick teaches all kids’ classes and the adult gi classes, focusing on making complex techniques accessible and practical. The gym’s schedule includes morning and evening classes for adults, beginner and fundamentals sessions for teens, and a full slate of youth classes broken out by age group (including a homeschool kids’ class on Tuesdays). Wednesdays and Fridays feature no-gi and wrestling-focused classes, taught by instructors with deep wrestling and submission grappling backgrounds like Brock Gutches—a Fargo National Champion—and Nate Roberson, a black belt with experience training under legends like Dean Lister and Jeff Glover. RiceBros welcomes students of all backgrounds, from first-timers to seasoned competitors. Saturday open mats are free and open to visitors, with both gi and no-gi rolling encouraged. For those looking for extra attention, private lessons are available throughout the week. The academy’s approach is rooted in the Rice family’s philosophy: you win or you learn, and success comes through steady effort and sharing knowledge.
