Ralph Gracie Berkeley Jiu Jitsu Academy has been a fixture in the East Bay since opening its doors in 2005, building on the legacy Ralph Gracie began when he first brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the Bay Area in 1994. The Berkeley academy operates under the direction of Professor Eduardo Fraga, a 5th degree black belt with decades of experience both competing and teaching. Eduardo’s background includes training in São Paulo under Ryan Gracie and a professional vale tudo career, as well as an impressive record as a 10-time IBJJF Pan American medalist and 7-time São Paulo State Champion. Classes at the academy reflect a commitment to technical progression and practical application. Students have access to both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with additional instruction in judo and wrestling to round out their grappling education. The program accommodates a wide range of interests, from students focused on fitness and self-defense to those who want to test themselves in competition. Kids' jiu-jitsu classes are also a core part of the schedule, designed to build confidence, discipline, and coordination from an early age. The school regularly hosts open mat sessions for adults, which are open to drop-in visitors. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the schedule is structured to welcome individuals and families from across the community. Under Professor Fraga’s leadership, the academy maintains a culture that values teamwork and healthy competition, rooted in the Gracie family tradition.
