4 Aurora St, Providence, RI
Providence BJJ - Jiu Jitsu was founded by Professor Marco McWilliams, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Tim Burrill. With more than two decades of high-level training, coaching, and competition behind him, Professor McWilliams brings a thoughtful and inclusive approach to the art. The academy’s vision has always been rooted in making jiu-jitsu accessible, with a particular focus on centering queer, trans, non-binary, women, and POC individuals and families. Located on Aurora Street in Providence, the school draws on its founder’s background as both a martial artist and Black history scholar to foster a space where students are encouraged to grow in courage and kindness, on and off the mats. Classes at Providence BJJ are offered seven days a week, with all sessions held in the gi. Instruction is designed to be adaptive and welcoming to all experience levels, from absolute beginners to advanced belts and international competitors. The academy also hosts a free class every Friday evening, open to the community and prospective students, providing an easy entry point for those new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For those unable to attend on Fridays, there are options to try a free trial class during the week, and gis can be rented for the first session. The facility is modern, air-conditioned, and wheelchair accessible. The kids program is open to children ages 5–12, with classes held twice weekly and an emphasis on movement, fun, and personal growth. Providence BJJ’s teaching staff, including Professor McWilliams, Professor Morena Lima, and teaching assistant Alonnie Stovall, are committed to providing a positive and supportive environment. Open mats are also available, and the academy offers flexible membership options, including discounts for those with limited income.
