Playground Jiu Jitsu was founded by brothers Paulo and Vinícius Canabarro, both black belts under Tim Burrill and Master Carlos Machado since 2017. After beginning their own journey in 2009 and competing extensively on the IBJJF circuit, they opened the academy in East Providence in 2019. Their teaching is rooted in a lineage that runs from Mitsuyo Maeda and Carlos Gracie through Carlos Gracie Jr., Carlos Machado, and Tim Burrill, and both brothers are on the mat for every class, ensuring their students learn directly from the source. The academy focuses exclusively on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with programs designed for every stage of life. Kids as young as four start in the PeeWee classes, which emphasize fundamentals through play and movement. Juniors (ages 9–12) and Teens (13–17) build technique, discipline, and confidence, while adults have access to beginner, all-levels, and advanced classes throughout the week. Morning and evening sessions make it possible for working adults to fit training into their schedules, and Saturday open mats are open to all, with no membership required. Private instruction is also available for students seeking focused, one-on-one coaching. The facility offers over 1,800 square feet of premium mats, full locker rooms with showers, and a clean, organized space built for families and serious practitioners alike. Every class is taught by the founders themselves—never by assistants—so students benefit from consistent, high-level instruction. Playground Jiu Jitsu stands as a testament to the Canabarro brothers' belief in the power of the art to build healthier, more confident people, and their commitment to sharing that experience with Riverside and the surrounding community.
