Claim this gymPerformance BJJ & Self Defense Academy has been part of Fair Lawn since 1998, opening its doors as North Jersey’s first true Gracie Jiu-Jitsu facility. The academy was founded with a clear purpose: to bring authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the area, taught the right way and passed down directly from the source. Nearly every class is still led by Professor Louis Vintaloro, a 5th-degree Gracie black belt with over 30 years on the mats, who built the academy from the ground up and remains committed to hands-on teaching. Classes follow the core Gracie philosophy: every technique is taught step by step, drilled until it becomes second nature, and tested under real pressure. The adult program features fundamentals, all-level gi and no-gi sessions, advanced gi classes, Gracie self-defense, and dedicated gi drill classes. Early morning and evening options make it possible for students to train around busy schedules, and open mat sessions run multiple times each week. Beginners are encouraged to start with the White Belt Gracie Fundamentals class, while advanced students have opportunities to refine their skills and challenge themselves. For younger students, Performance BJJ offers gi and no-gi classes for ages 5–8 and 9–13, with a focus on safe instruction and steady progression. The academy’s approach is straightforward: create a room where beginners and experienced grapplers train side by side, drilling until mastery and supporting each other’s growth. With a long history in Fair Lawn and a commitment to real Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the academy remains a steady presence for BJJ in northern New Jersey.
