926 Opportunity Place, Pella, IA
Pella Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded on the belief that disciplined training in martial arts builds confidence, resilience, and real-world skills for people of all ages. As a nonprofit academy, the school’s purpose has always been to serve the local community—especially veterans, first responders, and families—by offering a structured environment where hard work and perseverance lead to personal growth. The coaching team emphasizes practical technique, mental toughness, and respect, aiming to help every student progress, regardless of background or experience. Classes at Pella BJJ are led by instructors with deep roots in both martial arts and service. Head instructor Daniel Robbins, an Army veteran and BJJ black belt under Jason Clarke, brings decades of experience across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, and Japanese sword arts. He is joined by brown belt Matt Trout, who began his BJJ journey while stationed overseas, and Rylen Priest, a judo black belt and BJJ brown belt with a long history in grappling. Their combined backgrounds shape a curriculum that blends technical detail with functional self-defense and live training. The academy offers a full lineup of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in both gi and no-gi formats, with dedicated programs for adults, teens, and kids as young as five. Young students start in beginner and intermediate groups, developing coordination and discipline through age-appropriate instruction. Teens and adults can train in both gi and no-gi sessions, with opportunities for open mat and competition preparation. In addition to grappling, Pella BJJ also runs kickboxing classes for teens and adults, further broadening the martial arts education available at the academy. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible.
