Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy is built on the principle that strong fundamentals and technical understanding form the backbone of progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy’s approach reflects the teaching backgrounds and competitive experience of its black belt instructors, who emphasize structured learning and practical application for students at every level. Classes are led by Matt Martindale, Wyatt Green, and Christine Gould, each bringing a distinct area of expertise. Matt, a black belt with advanced degrees in kinesiology and education, teaches the advanced gi classes and fundamentals, drawing on his background as a physical education teacher and successful competitor. Wyatt, also a black belt and former biology teacher with a collegiate wrestling background, leads the no-gi and fundamentals classes, as well as the kids’ program. Christine, a black belt with over fifteen years as a personal trainer, focuses on kids’ classes and organizes monthly women’s self-defense sessions in Oneonta and Norwich. The academy offers a full schedule of traditional gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with dedicated programs for adults, children, and women. Competition training and self-defense curricula are both integrated into regular instruction, and students can progress from fundamentals to advanced techniques as they develop. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the instructors are committed to making authentic BJJ accessible to the Oneonta area through thoughtful, well-organized teaching and a focus on long-term development.
