Ohm Jiu Jitsu

Ohm Jiu Jitsu is guided by two black belts, DJ Wright and Russell Marbut, who bring years of experience and a shared focus on no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the Birmingham mats. DJ Wright holds a 2nd-degree black belt and combines his mechanical engineering background with a problem-solving approach to grappling, while Russell Marbut, a 1st-degree black belt, emphasizes the broader lessons of mastery that jiu jitsu offers beyond technique. Their ongoing study ensures the curriculum remains current, with teaching tailored to all levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. Training at Ohm centers on no-gi jiu jitsu, with beginner classes held four evenings a week at 5:30 pm, followed by all-levels sessions at 6:00 pm. The academy operates without contracts or sign-up fees, allowing students to train in workout gear without needing a gi. Open mat sessions occur on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, including an all-city open mat that welcomes practitioners from other gyms. This schedule supports steady progression while encouraging exploration and sparring outside formal classes. Located on 4th Avenue South, the gym is wheelchair accessible and offers a straightforward, no-frills environment where the emphasis is on consistent training and personal growth. The instructors prioritize a growth mindset, exposing students to evolving techniques and perspectives to keep their practice engaging.
