NU Jitsu Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in New Ulm is led by Professor José Carlos Lima Sobrinho, a black belt under Master Júlio César Pereira of GF Team. José Carlos has a competitive background that includes winning the IBJJF World Championship and the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro at rooster weight. He moved to Minnesota in 2018 and established this academy to bring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to New Ulm, a community that previously had no local BJJ training options. Classes focus on gi training for both kids and adults, with sessions held twice a week. The kids’ classes are designed to teach self-defense skills while encouraging discipline and respect, and they emphasize clear instruction that helps children understand techniques without losing the fun. Adults train in classes that cover fundamental through advanced techniques, with an eye toward fitness, self-defense, and sport competition. Students can drop in without prior registration. The academy operates out of a wheelchair-accessible facility at 319 N Front Street. NU Jitsu aims to provide practical martial arts training grounded in the instructor’s lineage and competitive experience, with a straightforward approach to teaching that suits New Ulm’s needs. The schedule and class structure reflect a focus on steady, consistent progress rather than a high-volume or tournament-centric environment.
