Nova Mente Jiu Jitsu Academy in Englewood is owned and run by Troy, a coach who personally welcomes new students and makes sure every class fits the person in front of him—whether that’s a first-timer, a parent with questions, or a competitor looking to sharpen their edge. The gym sits just off Federal and Oxford, drawing students from South Denver, Littleton, Lakewood, and surrounding neighborhoods. Troy’s approach is direct and practical: he wants people to leave their first class knowing something they can use, not just something to memorize. The adult program at Nova Mente covers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in both gi and no-gi formats, with a clear path from fundamentals to advanced and competition training. Fundamentals classes run several times a week, including early mornings and noon sessions for those with busy schedules. Advanced students can move into higher-level BJJ, MMA, and striking classes at their own pace—no pressure to jump in before they’re ready. The academy also offers open mats for visitors, and every membership includes full access to a well-equipped weight room. For kids, the academy starts as young as age 3 with the Tiny Squeakers program, designed for 3-6 year olds, and continues with Kids Jiu Jitsu for ages 7-12. Classes focus on practical self-defense, anti-bullying, and building confidence—not just technique. Coaches are attentive to individual needs, including children who need accommodations. Fridays add a dedicated kids’ self-defense kickboxing class. Loaner gis are available, so families can try classes without any upfront gear costs.
