Newaza Brazilian BJJ Club

Newaza Brazilian BJJ Club in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, was founded in 2013 by Professor Rogerio Sena, a 3rd-degree black belt who began his jiu-jitsu journey after moving from Brazil to the United States. Rogerio’s early years were shaped by a family steeped in athletics, and his passion for grappling took off after discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1998. He earned his black belt under Professor Daniel Gracie and now leads Newaza alongside a team of experienced instructors, including Professor Peter Vo and Jose Fernandez, each bringing a unique martial arts background to their teaching. At Newaza, the approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is rooted in practical skill, consistency, and personal growth rather than rigid standards or formal belt tests. Promotions are awarded based on a student’s dedication, technical development, and regular attendance. The academy values individuality, encouraging students to find techniques and strategies that suit their own strengths while maintaining humility and respect on the mats. This philosophy shapes a training environment where progress is measured by effort and improvement, not just time or talent. The club offers a full slate of programs for all ages, starting with Little Kids classes for ages 4–7, Kids for 8–10, and Juniors for 11–15, with placements adjusted for size and readiness. Adults and teens can train in beginner-focused fundamentals, all-level gi classes, and dedicated no-gi sessions. Open mats are available for juniors and adults to drill and spar, and the curriculum covers both self-defense and sport jiu-jitsu. With instructors who have backgrounds in wrestling, judo, and other martial arts, Newaza provides a wide foundation for students to build their own game, whether their goals are fitness, competition, or personal development.
