4617 Van Nuys Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA
New Ground Jiu Jitsu in Sherman Oaks is an all no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy founded and led by Coach Lobes, a 10th Planet black belt with over 16 years on the mats and 12 years of coaching experience. The academy’s story started in a one-bedroom apartment and quickly grew from garage sessions to a dedicated space on Van Nuys Blvd, officially opening its doors in July 2021. Coach Lobes’ background is rooted in the 10th Planet system, with years spent coaching in the Valley, helping launch 10th Planet Seattle, and a deep commitment to building a training environment where both beginners and seasoned grapplers can thrive. At New Ground, the focus is entirely on no-gi jiu-jitsu, reflecting the modern direction of submission grappling. The class schedule is built around all-levels and fundamentals instruction for adults, with a strong technical emphasis and a clear pathway for progression. The academy also offers a 6-week beginner’s program to help new students build a solid foundation, as well as private coaching for those looking for focused, individualized development. Open mats are a regular feature and welcome practitioners from all schools, creating a space for cross-training and skill sharing. Kids’ programs are an important part of the academy’s mission, introducing younger students to no-gi jiu-jitsu and the values of discipline and respect. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and drop-ins are welcome for most classes and open mats. New Ground’s approach is shaped by Coach Lobes’ belief in technical excellence, camaraderie, and the idea that jiu-jitsu should be accessible to anyone willing to put in the work.
