Neutral Grounds Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy

Neutral Grounds Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy was founded in 2003 by Professor Evaldo Lima, making it the first BJJ school established in Long Beach, California. Professor Lima is a black belt with deep roots in the Helio Gracie lineage and has earned multiple titles including IBJJF World Masters Champion and Pan American Champion. His background in the Brazilian Air Force gave him firsthand experience with the practical applications of Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense and military tactics, which informs the academy’s approach to training. The academy has remained under his leadership since its founding, with assistant instructors who have trained there for 8 to 12 years. Training at Neutral Grounds covers gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for all ages starting at four years old, with classes divided into age groups for kids, teens, and adults. The curriculum emphasizes technique, leverage, and strategic positioning, reflecting Professor Lima’s philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu as the “gentle art.” Beyond BJJ, the academy offers Muay Thai classes for students seven and up, led by Kru Woody, who has been part of the team for over a decade. Wrestling is also part of the program for youth up to high school age, with coaching from Jorge, who brings experience from local high school wrestling programs. Neutral Grounds is a USA Wrestling charter club, supporting freestyle, Greco-Roman, and folkstyle wrestling styles. The academy operates with a structured schedule that includes drop-in classes and no walk-ins; prospective students are encouraged to schedule a free introductory session. Parking is available on site, and the school maintains a clear tuition policy. Neutral Grounds also hosts bully-proof seminars and provides a focused training environment that integrates self-defense with sport grappling and striking arts.
