Monadnock Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by black belt Aaron Shields, who brings a practical, individualized approach to teaching BJJ in Swanzey. The academy’s philosophy centers on helping each student discover a jiu jitsu “game” that fits their unique strengths and goals, whether that’s competition, self-defense, fitness, or mental challenge. Shields and his senior students emphasize technique and strategy over brute force, aiming to develop not just physical skills but also confidence and problem-solving ability on the mats. Classes run seven days a week and include both gi and no-gi instruction for adults and kids. The kids’ program is divided by age groups starting at four years old, focusing on coordination, discipline, and basic self-defense alongside the technical curriculum. Adult classes cover gi and no-gi training with open mats available for additional rolling time. There is also a women’s gi class that provides a focused environment for female practitioners. The schedule’s flexibility and variety accommodate newcomers, experienced grapplers, and those returning after a break. The academy’s facility at 140 Monadnock Hwy is wheelchair accessible, reflecting an inclusive environment. Students train in a setting that encourages steady progress through personalized coaching and a balance of drilling, sparring, and strategy discussion.
